The first letter of the Letters Between Friends series from TRICIA! She writes as she’s out and about on her roadtrip:
Dear Lindsay,
It’s happening! Hello! This is a little bit weird, but I’m excited.
Since I’ve been roadtripping now for a week and a half, I’ve been thinking about how often our friendship took place on the road. One of the highlights of our youth group, for me, was the summer trips in fifteen passenger vans to places all over the United States. We’ve also ridden around Senegal and just this year we drove to Waco, TX together.
One of the reasons I think we’re such good friends is because we’re so comfortable together. Look at those sleeping faces! We hadn’t seen each other for two and a half months, you were in a new country, but during the drive from Dakar to Fatick, we put aside the need to “talk” and “catch up” in favor of sleeping. Friends who sleep together stay together! Um…wait. No. You know what I mean.
I’m not really sure I can count that second picture as a road trip, since we were just driving down the street to the school to unload Operation Christmas Child boxes. BUT WE WERE RIDING ON TOP OF A VAN. So I’m counting it.
I’ve definitely been having fun on this road trip of mine, but I know I would have even more fun if you were here too! I thought of you a lot when I was hanging out with Sarah in Washington, DC. Before there was the Fab Five, the three of us used to hang out! I will always remember the three of us going to see Spiderman and you shouting “TOBY!” at the screen during a dramatic moment. Then there was Christmas a couple years ago when Sarah and I made a Rice Krispie treat castle. No one was impressed, but you ate a tower face first. I really appreciated your support.
Someday the two of us will have to plan a trip out to DC and we can hang out with Sarah again!
Now that we’re actually starting this Letters Between Friends series, I can definitely say that i like it! I’ve thought of you more consistently throughout the trip, thinking of things I want to share with you or things that remind me of you. This is going to keep you in the forefront of my thoughts, which, let’s be real, is where you belong!
Love,
Tricia

She loves reading…I really don’t. She finds all the cool artists and musicians and listens to awesome music. I listen to the popular stuff…from 5 years ago…In school, she wasn’t scared to be her own person. I was desperate to be the in crowd. Tricia and I bonded…with a tight seal. I remember helping her put on eye liner and she boosted my confidence and showed me how to properly have a crush on a movie star. (Merry 4 Life! [LOTR]) College didn’t change us too much. Every Christmas/New Years, we were home and doing something. Then, I got married and she decided to travel ALL OVER. I really didn’t mind though, because that gave me an excuse to travel to see her! And it worked!
Now that we’re older, we have become VERY much alike which ultimately put the gorilla glue to our already tight bond. If I were single and more intellectual, I would be Tricia. And if Tricia were to be married and have red hair, she would be me. So, we live vicariously through each other. It’s perfect really. I say this very loosely because it’s not totally true, but I think that we are so apart of each other’s life even though we are not in each other’s day-to-day, that it’s possible. Almost creepy. The passion Tricia has for life is inspiring and the spontaneity and drive she exudes makes anything she does SUCCESSFUL! I know I’m making her feel slightly uncomfortable right now, but guess what?! She likes awkward….so that’s why I’m doing this! Boo ya! Yeah…she’s pretty amazing.
So… HERE IT IS! Our new series…
The Introduction:
Lindsay and Tricia grew up in central Illinois, where they attended the same church but different schools. They became friends as two parts of the Fabulous Five (self-named, but still true). They went to different colleges, but their friendship remained despite the distance. Lindsay has traveled throughout the Pacific Northwest (she loves Seattle best) and briefly lived in Nashville, TN after graduating from college. Now she’s back home in central Illinois, married to her high school sweetheart, and raising two adorable red-headed girls. Tricia was a horrible chaperone during Lindsay’s high school romance days (she mostly tried to negotiate situations so Lindsay and Nathan could cuddle), and she had the honor of being a bridesmaid in their wedding. Now Tricia is everywhere else – from college in Tennessee to getting a graduate degree in Texas and soon heading to Greece to work at a safe house for women who have been sexually exploited. Although both lead different life paths, they both have the travel & adventure chromosome in their DNA.
Because of this, their utter dislike of anything to do with exercise, and their love for Jesus, their friendship remains. Tricia visited Lindsay when she lived in Nashville and ALWAYS sets a day aside for coffee when home visiting family; Lindsay went one step further to visit Tricia in Texas and even Senegal, West Africa. Their friendship is strong enough to allow them to live separate lives, confident that knowing the moment they’re reunited, everything will fall back into place.
Still….why not help the friendship along a little? Although they are currently together in Peoria, Tricia is leaving for her next adventure to Greece in January. Since they both have blogs, they’ve decided to spend each Thursday writing to each other – Tricia on the first and third Thursdays of each month, Lindsay on the second and fourth.
